How long does teeth whitening last in Denmark?

Teeth whitening is not permanent, and how long it lasts depends on the method and your habits. The Danish Dental Association (Tandlægeforeningen) says a repeat bleaching at the dentist may be needed after 2 to 3 years. With at-home whitening, short regular top-ups keep the result going, and cutting back on coffee, tea, red wine and smoking slows the return of stains.

There is no single number for everyone. Two people using the same product can see different results, because starting shade, diet, smoking and daily oral care all play a part. This guide explains why whitening fades and what you can do about it.

Why does teeth whitening fade?

Whitening lifts existing stains but does not stop new ones forming. Tandlægeforeningen names coffee, tea, red wine and cigarettes as some of the biggest causes of discoloured teeth, and teeth also change colour naturally with age, as enamel wears and the warmer colour of the dentine underneath shows through. That is why results fade gradually rather than suddenly.

Tandlægeforeningen also notes that teeth pick up new colour more easily in the first days after bleaching, and that how long the result lasts depends on how much staining your teeth are exposed to.

How long do results last for each type of whitening?

Whitening at the dentist lasts the longest: Tandlægeforeningen says a repeat may be needed after 2 to 3 years, and advises repeating bleaching only rarely. At-home kits and strips vary more, because results depend on the product, finishing the course and how often you top up. Whitening toothpaste helps with everyday surface stains.

Method How it works How long it lasts
Bleaching with your dentist Usually a custom tray from the dentist, worn at home for 1 to 2 hours a day or overnight for 2 to 3 weeks (Tandlægeforeningen) A repeat may be needed after 2 to 3 years (Tandlægeforeningen)
SmilePro Advanced Kit 10 minutes a day for 7 days with an LED light Kept going with a 10-minute top-up every 2 weeks (once a week for heavy coffee, tea or red wine drinkers); depends on diet and daily oral care
SmilePro Whitening Strips 30 minutes a day for 7 days Kept going with one strip top-up every 2 weeks (once a week for heavy coffee, tea or red wine drinkers); at every 2 weeks the 7 top-ups in the pack last about three months; depends on diet and daily oral care
Whitening toothpaste Daily brushing Helps lift everyday surface stains; best for maintenance

How long do whitening strips last?

Results from a course of whitening strips last longer when you protect them. How long depends on your diet, whether you smoke and your daily oral care. Strips also work well as a top-up after a full LED kit course, to hold your shade between courses rather than starting from scratch each time. If you move from a kit course to a strips course, or the other way round, wait 2 weeks between finishing one and starting the other.

The SmilePro strips pack is built for this: after the 7-day course, the remaining 7 treatments are maintenance top-ups that help stop stains setting in again. Use one strip treatment once every 2 weeks, or once a week if you drink a lot of coffee, tea or red wine, the same rhythm as the Advanced Kit's top-up. At once every 2 weeks one pack gives you a full course plus about three months of top-ups. After each treatment, wait 1 hour before eating or drinking anything except water.

How to make teeth whitening last longer

Top up little and often, brush twice a day, and cut back on coffee, tea, red wine and smoking, which bring staining back more quickly. Be extra careful with dark food and drink in the first days after a course, when teeth pick up colour more easily. With the SmilePro Advanced Kit, one 10-minute session every two weeks maintains your result; with SmilePro strips, one 30-minute strip treatment every two weeks. If you drink a lot of coffee, tea or red wine, top up once a week instead.

Simple habits that help:

  • Rinse your mouth with water after coffee, tea or red wine.
  • Use a whitening toothpaste to lift everyday surface stains between top-ups.
  • Do your top-ups on the same day each fortnight, so they become routine.
  • Keep your dental check-ups.

Is teeth whitening permanent?

No. Whitening lightens the stains on your teeth, but new staining builds up over time and teeth naturally darken with age. Think of it as a result you maintain, like a hair colour, rather than a one-off fix. Short, regular top-ups are easier to fit into your routine than repeating a full course every time.

How SmilePro helps you keep your shade

After your 7-day course with the SmilePro Advanced Kit, a 10-minute top-up every two weeks maintains the result, and refill pens work with the light you already have. Whitening strips suit top-ups on the go, one every 2 weeks, and the SmilePro Whitening Toothpaste helps lift everyday surface stains between sessions.
